The Eagles Mere Borough Council established the Shade Tree Commission in 1994.
Council charges it with maintaining the trees in the shade tree right-of-way, which extends 10’ beyond that of the roadway.
Since 1994, our Arbor Day tree planting has resulted in nearly 600 trees being added to our community.
As a result of the commission’s work, Eagles Mere has been designated as Tree City USA for several years running.
Here’s how to get involved:
Each year a letter is sent in the winter to individual landowners in Eagles Mere providing them with a select list of trees, along with an order sheet.
Trees can be ordered for designated areas or on a homeowner’s property.
Space is also provided on the order form to indicate whether one would like to assist with the plantings.
The DCNR County Forester provides guidance to the commission.
On Arbor Day, teams are organized to plant, water, mulch, and clean up around planting sites.
Arbor Day tree planting may be undertaken at two different times.
Bare root planting is performed in mid to late April.
Bare root trees are used whenever possible, as they start their new life with an enhanced root structure and a head start on growth.
Balled in burlap (usually evergreens) and container trees are typically planted the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend.
A mid-day lunch is held for all of the volunteers after the planting.
At times joint projects may be performed with the Eagles Mere Conservancy.
Contributions are welcomed to benefit our continued operation – we are a non-profit entity relying on donations from concerned citizens.
Many local businesses do more than their fair share by donating their time and equipment to help with the materials needed for the planting, site preparation for the trees, and in many other ways.
We have also been successful in grant procurement from federal, state, and local sources to help with the replacement of dead trees, removal of trees hazardous to public safety, and to have a tree survey performed.
All those who donate monetarily or volunteer their time to The Shade Tree Commission operations feel a unique and deep sense of community spirit.
